In Q3 we did a research on biochar and vermicomposting and as IPCC report notes Biochar is the safest, most durable and fastest way to draw down carbon today. ( IPCC: BIOCHAR -POTENTIAL TO REMOVE 2.6 BILLION TONNES CO2 β Reverse Carbon)
To date we have composted over tone of organic waste and produced over 200 kgs of fine biochar. Composting takes a duration of 3 months and we were able to fetch over 150kgs of sieved fine compost that we mixed with biochar to produce over 350kgs of organic fertilizer ready for free distribution to farmers
a).Composting one tone of organic waste both plant and animal for 2-3 months.
b). Sieve compost to get fine dust particles
c). Fine organic compost
d). Biochar production using organic plant waste, figs or tree branches, make use of an underground clay oven or an enclosed barbecue oven where oxygen doesnβt mix with carbon during pyrolysis very important.
f). Sieve the biochar
g).Mix sieved biochar with fine organic compost ratio 1;1
h). Add 15-20 litres of biogas digester slur or pig urine very rich in Nitrogen and Ammonia
i).Mix thorough and dry for a few days
Pack and store ready to be distributed to farmers as organic fertilizer, conducting environmental workshops and trainings, biochar is a rich soil enhancer that reduces irrigation and a long term carbon sink. The IPCC report highlighted biochar as one of the safest, most durable and fastest ways to draw down carbon. (carbon sequestration)
Greenpill Kenya will keep updating the test results with farmers from different regions.
